Description

Melons belong to Cucurbitaceae and they are dicotyledonous, climbing and annual plants. Many people think they are native to North Africa, Central Asia and India, but it is difficult to conclude this because people in the Mideast also grow melons. The palm-shaped leaves which are split into from three to seven parts are crisscrossed, and stalks are long. Tendrils come out across the leaves. There are male, female and bisexual melon flowers, which are covered by bristly hairs. The fruits are round and their pulp is white, green or golden yellow. People usually eat melons after freezing them, or use them for ice cream or juice.

  1. Netted melon: The surface of the fruit is split like a net.
  2. Cantaloupe: Fruit has no mesh on the surface, but has knot-shaped processes and vertical grooves.
  3. Winter melon: The fruit surface is flat. Even fruit with vertical lines on the surface has no processes or meshes.
  4. Musk melon: Netted melons and Cantaloupes with a strong smell are called Musk melons. The strong smell is likened to musk.
  5. Oriental melon: Oriental melons came from India via China, and belong to the category of winter melons. Oriental melons are also grown in greenhouses.
